about

Long out of print, this album is available online for the very first time, right here on Bandcamp. Recorded at the old Q Division Studios on Albany Street, Boston, Massachusetts, in the spring of 1999. It was produced by Seattle legend, Steve Fisk (Nirvana, Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, Pell Mell).

After leaving Northern Irish post-punk band SCHTUM, CA McNeill - AKA - Christian McNeill emigrated to the US in the spring of 1997 and formed a new band, HYBRASIL, with bassist Jeremy Dryden, and drummer Jeff Berlin. After playing residencies in small clubs around the Boston area, Hybrasil quickly grew a large following, enlisting the help of Morphine saxophonist Dana Colley, and mandolin maestro Jimmy Ryan, along the way.

"Friendly Destroyer" is an experimental album at times, the sound of a band having fun in the studio while finding its collective sound. Released in the spring of 1999, the album made it into the Top 10 in the College Radio Top 100 charts. It also earned the band a Boston Music Award nomination for album of the year.

These songs were recorded live in one or two takes to two inch analogue tape. There were no click tracks involved either, so you can hear human beings collectively breathe together as some songs naturally speed up and slow down just a little, here and there.

We hope you enjoy this collection of songs, a musical time capsule from a Boston band in a bygone era.

about

Christian McNeill Boston, Massachusetts

Christian McNeill is an underground legend whose music demands to be experienced. Longtime Boston journalist, Nate Dow, describes him best, "..his blend of styles and influences is intoxicating, turning elements of soul, gospel and R&B into a cocktail that rocks. McNeill’s stage presence is natural, unaffected and powerfully evocative, almost overwhelming. It is part of the entertainment package." ... more
